Stewart Island Water Taxi and Eco-Guiding is proud to support to several conservation groups.

For the past five years, we have been proud to offer transport of personnel and gear for the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust field scientists  "Team Penguin" has been studying the endangered

Ian and Phillippa are proud supporters of the Stewart Island/Rakiura Community and Environment Trust (SIRCET).  This organization has been working to create a safe habitat in and around the township of Halfmoon Bay for the successful reintroduction of native birds. We hold Department of Conservation guiding and water taxi concessions.  These allow us to operate in Rakiura National Park, educating visitors about our unique wildlife and plants.

Ian is a trustee of the Ulva Island Trust.  This trust is a group of like-minded Stewart Islanders working alongside the Department of Conservation to provide an open bird sanctuary that is now an icon of Stewart Island.
The Trust has provided funding for visitor facilities on Ulva and also for bird species transfers.  We were thrilled to host Sirocco the kakapo in 2006, and this remarkable parrot graced the island again in 2008.  If you are a keen birder, a twitcher (crazy keen birder), or even if you have no interest whatsoever in birds, you would be absolutely thrilled to meet this extremely endangered parrot (there are only 124 left on earth). The kakapo (night owl) is a
nocturnal, flightless, and strangely sweet-smelling parrot (even his poo smells like potpourri!).  For more information on Sirocco (and to see we're not making it up when we say he smells like an

Ian was a member of the Southland Conservation Board from 2005 to 2011.

Ian and Philippa have worked hard to eradicate alien weeds and pests from their property. We have restored and maintain the historic buildings on our property including Lewis Acker's old stone house and Travellers' Rest.
